Bee City USA-Webster in coordination with the UF/IFAS Sumter County Master Gardeners and Sumter Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society plan to celebrate the week (National Pollination Week) of June 18 by planning and starting a new pollinator garden in the central part of town in front of the Welcome to Webster Signage. Native pollinator plants and labor will be supplied by these groups during this week. Some plants have already been donated by these groups and Shady Oaks Native Plant Nursery plans to donate more.
A Proclamation commemorating this week has been executed by the City of Webster and signed by the Mayor and Councilmen. Webster has been the first city in the entire state of Florida to be designated officially as a Bee City USA. It is our aim to enlist as many cities as possible to join us. The decline of pollinators in the USA is critical and many of our crops are dependent upon these pollinators solely. Every third bite of food we ingest is also dependent upon these organisms.
