Tomoka Chapter members enjoyed a wonderful December meeting and potluck dinner in the community room of the Ocoee Christian Church. Tomoka member Rev. Margaret Marquis has been the pastor of Ocoee Christian Church since February of 2008. She is a sixth generation Floridian with roots in Florida dating to the 1830s. Margaret and her husband, Bill are also reenactors and gave an interesting presentation at Tomoka’s Constitution luncheon.
The Ocoee church was designed by an architect from Boston and by 1891 the Gothic sanctuary was raised. The sanctuary has a floor plan similar to that of Gothic cathedrals of Europe, on a much smaller scale. The windows are all stained glass and were designed and made in Belgium. A glass artisan from Belgium accompanied the windows and installed them. While there is no documentation as proof, tradition in the church says that the stained glass in the nave and transept windows came from the Tiffany studios. In 1997, Ocoee Christian Church was added to the National Register of Historic Sites.
