The Sumter County Retired Educators held their December meeting at the First Baptist Church of Bushnell. The meeting was called to order by President Glenn Stephens. The devotional was given by Alice Johnson. Director of District IV, Carolyn Stephens, brought greetings from the other units in District IV. She commended the Sumter unit on their participation in the "Socks for Veterans" project.

Ed Tomberlin gave a report on the items of the Florida Legislature that we as retired educators should be concerned about. Mildred Stephens presented the Cultural Affairs display featuring the members of the organization that have December birthdays and also interesting worldwide events that take place in December.

The Fruit Pickers of the First Baptist Church, Bushnell, led us in singing Christmas carols, as well as sharing some of their repertoire with us. Members of the string ensemble include: Rickey Taylor, Larry Estell, Bonnie Estell, Carol Van Kuran, Lynn Crawford, Joan Couch, Dick McLeod, Bob Dawson, Bristo McGregor Skinner, Vonda Kay Gerry, and Lowell Gerry.

Pat Newell, Scholarship Chairperson, reported that the winner of the 2011 fund raising project was Josephine Strong Simons. Congratulations Josephine!
