Lake-Sumter Community College’s Kids’ College is a fun, energized learning opportunity for students ages 7 to 14. Started as a summer vacation educational alternative, it provides an enriched experience for school-age children to explore new areas of interest, to expand their creativity, and to strive to do their very best at whatever venture they pursue.
In addition to making new friends, Kids’ College children explore subjects and participate in activities normally not available during the school year. They can learn a new sport or improve current athletic skills; investigate nature or enhancing computer skills; learn dance steps or practice cheerleading; or utilize creative imaginations in writing, crafts, music and acting classes or a Kids’ College production. Who knows when they might discover a career or an interest that enriches their lives?
This is the 27th year for the Leesburg Kids’ College and the 15th year for Clermont’s program. Each Kids’ College summer is identified by its own unique theme. The 2015 “Join the Scene” slogan will emblaze our participant shirts & caps this summer.
Kids’ College has grown over the years, expanding from an annual enrollment of 200 to over 1100 students. LSSC is very proud of the 200 or more high-school student assistants, who earn public service volunteer hours that can be applied toward Bright Futures Scholarships, and of the 70-plus professional edu- cators who are selected for their expertise and teaching abilities. It is their dedication that contributes the most to making Kids’ College such a successful summer experience for children.
Lake and Sumter County communities, as well as the college administration have been enthusiastically supportive of Kids’ College over the last two decades. It is because of this support that LSSC is glad to continue the tradition by offering three two-week sessions this summer at both of its locations. The Leesburg Kids’ College will be on LSSC’s Leesburg Campus during June 15 through 25, June 29 through July 9, and July 13 through July 23 while the South Lake program will be held at East Ridge Middle School, in Clermont during June 15 through 25, June 29 through July 9, and July 13 through July 23.
